The use of composite materials in architecture is a fascinating growth area for our industry with novel and innovative work being done both in structural and cosmetic applications.
We are proud that our equipment has been so successfully used in the project to refurbish three prestigious harbour buildings in Valencia (originally the base of the Americas Cup Team) to become the new University EDEM Business School with design and technical direction by ERRE Arquitectura.
The buildings combine striking cosmetic design with state of the art energy efficiency and environmental protection.
Miraplas SL are a well established composite manufacturer in Alicante and have developed their RTM expertise with help from CI’s Spanish distributor EFA 2000 Composites and closed-mould specialist Jose Manuel Bey who provided technical support and tooling.
Over 2000 composite panels were required with a diverse range of sizes and shapes and all conforming to stringent fire safety regulations (EN 13501-1)
To achieve this Miraplas used Scott Bader’s Crestapol 1212 high performance acrylic resin filled with 170 phr by weight of Alumina Trihydrate (ATH)
The Miraplas Ciject injection machines successfully processed 84 tons of this highly filled material to produce over 14000m² of panels. At the end of the project the machines were routinely serviced and found to be in excellent condition.
As suppliers of the majority of the raw materials used, Owens Corning were awarded the Innovation Award at ‘The Future of Composites in Construction’ at JEC 2017 Chicago.
