We were honored to be invited to attend the presentation of the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation to our customer Jo Bird.
Jo Bird are well established manufactures of fire safety and lifesaving equipment cabinets designed to withstand the toughest environments and have won the award for the second time in five years.
The award recognises the redesign and manufacture of a high volume/lower margin fire safety cabinet employing the latest technology. In doing so the company has also achieved the remarkable feat of doubling productivity.
To overcome the challenges of implementing major manufacturing changes within the company and to speed up the uptake of new technology and materials they took the step of sponsoring an Engineering Doctorate student through the University of Bristol.
As a result of this sponsorship, three years ago graduate engineer Laxman Sivanathan joined the team at Jo Bird and quickly implemented significant changes to reduce the direct costs in the manufacture of the cabinets, as well as integrating product innovations as they occurred.
The award and citation were presented to MD Guy Atkins by the Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset Mrs Anne Maw assisted by the Deputy Lieutenant Mr Robert Drewett on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen.
It’s great to see their hard work recognised at such a prestigious level!
